Badly Behaved Children

As I have traveled around the world I have noticed something very revealing about children’s behaviour. The less Western cultural influence within the country the less bad behaviour is seen in that country’s children. The more Western cultural influence within the country the more bad behaviour is seen in that country’s children.

For example, several years ago I spent some time in Yemen. At that time in Yemen there were no movie theaters, no discos, no Western content on television, no Western magazines, no computer games, and no Western fast food restaurants. Additionally, virtually no one spoke English. During the whole of my stay in Yemen I never saw one badly behaved child. Neither did I ever see any harshness in the relationship between adults and children. Children as young as four years old would sit quietly and attentively for hours listening to discussions among small groups of Islamic scholars.

In countries that have some small degree of Western influence, for example Western fast food restaurants, a few Western movies (sub-titled), no Western television content, no computer games, and few people speak English I observed some bad behaviour among the children which was very similar in form to that of children in Western countries. I also saw some small amount of harshness between adults and children during attempts to correct the children’s wrong behaviour.

Then in countries where there were many Western movies, extensive Western content on television, hundreds of Western fast food restaurants, great popularity of computer games, and many people speak English although it is not the native language, I have observed the children to be virtually as badly behaved as children in Western countries. Not surprisingly I saw large amounts of harshness between adults and children during attempts to correct the children’s wrong behaviour.

I think the conclusions based on these observations are quite obvious. I say to all Muslims that you should do whatever you can to keep the children of your communities away from the corrupting influences of modern Western culture.
